The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division is seeking a prenatal genetic counselor to join our team to help drive our mission of providing high quality compassionate care to our patients, evidence-based education and training to our medical students, providers, and faculty, and pursuing innovative and evaluative research as we further the acquisition of women's health knowledge.

The successful candidate will provide a broad range of counseling services, including assessment and care for prenatal or preconception patients who are at risk for having a child with an inherited condition, birth defect, developmental disability or other disorder. Through these services, the genetic counselor will support the improved patient understanding that enables personalized informed decision-making, identify families at risk, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns, and review available options with the family. With supervision from the faculty and physicians in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, the genetic counselor will exercise independent judgment in gathering information from the patient and referring physician, assess this information, enable patient decision-making and present follow up recommendations. This position may coordinate and support research activities within an area of expertise.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Certification/LicensureBoard eligible for certification as a Genetic Counselor.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with pre-conception and prenatal genetic counseling that includes but are not limited to the following indications:


· Positive aneuploidy screen

· Maternal genetic disease (e.g., CF, NF1, hemoglobinopathy)

· Maternal carrier screening

· Previous carrier screening indicating that the fetus is at risk to have inherited a genetic disorder

· Background indicating a higher risk of certain genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, or Tay-Sachs and other genetic conditions

· Family History of genetic disorder, birth defect, developmental delay in either parent or other family member

· Abnormal ultrasound suspicious for a potential genetic condition

· Teratogen exposure

· Recurrent pregnancy loss

Experience with screening and diagnostic testing procedures that include:

· Diagnostic ultrasound

· Amniocentesis


· Aneuploidy screen - first trimester combined screen, first and second-trimester screen

· Noninvasive prenatal testing
