Position Summary

The TRIO Upward Bound program at UNM-Gallup provides academic support services to first-generation and low-income, high school students enrolled in partner schools within the Gallup-McKinley County School District. The TRIO Upward Bound program consists of a 6-week summer program in addition to academic year services to prepare selected high school students for post-secondary curriculum by focusing on academic success and academic preparation. The overall goal of TRIO Upward Bound is to promote high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment.

Our program is in search of an organized and energetic candidate to fill the position of Coordinator, Education Support; this position is essential for service delivery and overall program success. The Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Director in providing academic support, planning and delivering academic programming, and assisting with outreach activities.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of the Upward Bound academic year and summer program component;
  • Oversee the Upward Bound classroom and/or after-school site in the absence of the TRIO Upward Bound Director or Advisors;
  • Collaborate with Upward Bound staff to plan and deliver academic activities, topical workshops, and college-readiness group discussions;
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of off-campus college visits and cultural enrichment activities;
  • Collaborate with Upward Bound staff to plan and lead career exploration and mentoring activities, including scheduling guest speakers;
  • Provide academic assistance and guidance in completing college, scholarship, and financial aid applications;
  • Conduct outreach presentations at schools and community organizations to identify and recruit eligible students;
  • Review new student applications to determine eligibility and explain the program to students and families;
  • Become familiar with students' academic history, schedule, and personal/family situations as appropriated;
  • Collaborate with Upward Bound staff and school personnel to collect, analyze, and monitor student participation and performance data;
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and assist with updating the student information database and preparation of the Annual Performance Report;
  • Maintain an active presence during the delivery of programming to uphold a safe and responsible environment for all student participants;
  • Perform or oversee clerical and administrative support tasks, including answering telephones, assisting and resolving problems and inquiries, reviewing and organizing incoming and outgoing correspondence, ordering and purchasing program supplies and materials;
  • Monitors, reconciles and assists with fiscal administration, including all procurement, payroll, travel, and general contract and grant activities;
  • Assist in general program operations as needed.

Upward Bound personnel will work collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, faculty, staff and community partners to ensure student success and program objectives; program services and activities may require flexible schedules, including evening and weekends. This is a term appointment through August 31, 2020 with continued employment contingent on funding. The UNM-Gallup Upward Bound program is approved through August 31, 2020 with funding awarded annually.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with pre-college students in a secondary or post-secondary environment
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to coordinate multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications
  • Proven proficiency with word processing and data management packages
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise flexibility and professionalism when dealing with diverse internal and external clients
