Position Summary

The Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico seeks to hire a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Culture and Communication for the 2019-2020 academic year (starting August 2019). The department expects to hire a specialist in culture and communication and is open to various theoretical and methodological approaches.

The Communication & Journalism Department offers undergraduate majors in Communication and in Journalism and Mass Communication. The MA degree is a general communication degree; at the doctoral level, intercultural, health, and media are the areas of emphasis. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to our emphasis in intercultural communication.

The intercultural emphasis defines culture broadly as pertaining to emergent identities; discursive practices and norms; performative, artistic, and mediated forms; locations of speaking/acting/producing; organizational systems; and institutional structures. Culture is socially constructed and structurally produced and therefore a factor that is influential across all communication contexts. Courses reflect this emphasis, focusing on questions and critiques of "diversity" in and across local, national, and global contexts; identities and subjectivities (i.e., nationality, race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, multivocality, intersectionality, positionality, and agency); and places and spaces (i.e., transnationalism and globalization, migration, borderlands, social activism and change, and sustainability).

Faculty members in this position typically teach two courses per semester at the graduate, advanced undergraduate, and introductory undergraduate levels, with the possibility to teach in their areas of specialization; advise graduate students (M.A./Ph.D.); maintain an active scholarly research/creative activities agenda related to culture and communication; and perform departmental, university, or disciplinary service.

Minimum Qualification: Doctorate in communication or closely related field, completed by August 1, 2019.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Publications and research agenda in culture and communication (and/or intercultural communication).

  • Demonstrated excellence in university level teaching experience in culture and communication (and/or intercultural communication).

  • Record of active scholarly involvement in professional communication associations.

  • Demonstrated departmental, institutional, or disciplinary service

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

Application InstructionsA complete application consists of: (1) letter of interest identifying areas of expertise, research interests, and teaching experience; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) a sample of a recent, representative publication or conference paper; (4) Evidence of teaching, effectiveness in the form of recent student course evaluations and teaching observations, or in the absence of teaching experience, a statement of teaching interest and philosophy (5) statement on diversity and inclusive excellence; and (6) names and contact information of three references. Reference(s) may be contacted as the search progresses.

Applicants who are appointed to a UNM faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial employment with UNM.
