Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Gallup Branch seeks qualified applicants for the position(s) of Academic Advisor. This critical position is the first face of advisement for the college. Advisement is a key department within the division of Student Affairs; Academic Advisors primarily provide guidance and success coaching for prospective, current, and former students, including students enrolled for dual or concurrent credit.

A main responsibility held by Academic Advisors is to assess the needs of our students through a variety of proactive approaches and outreach efforts. The successful candidate(s) will also perform the following:

  • Assess students’ academic levels, attend to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advise on academic program changes.
  • Advise and assist students in the development of academic plans and class schedules.
  • Analyze applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry and exit from the university.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate files and records.
  • Coordinate and facilitate new student orientation and other outreach initiatives to promote advisement services, academic programs and certificates; this includes participation and coordination of recruitment events on campus, in area high schools and educational sites, and throughout the community.

In addition, the successful candidate(s) may coordinate and facilitate dual enrollment in partnership with various educational sites and school districts; this includes assisting in the production and distribution of dual credit course materials, schedules, and other literature; managing the application and enrollment process; providing academic advisement and identifying college and career pathways that align with
student goals; conducting student orientation sessions; facilitating the purchase and delivery of related materials to students at partnering high schools; and serving as a liaison for internal and external stakeholders.

Conditions of Employment
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to:

  • Multi-task with ever changing priority demands.
  • Analyze and interpret student transcripts, associated records and documents.
  • Identify and implement dual credit initiatives and strategies.
  • Initiate and/or implement student engagement, retention, and completion strategies.

Experience in:?

  • Working in a high traffic service oriented environment.
  • Working with and supporting culturally diverse student populations, with a demonstrated ability to relate to and advisement of non-traditional student population.
