Job: Part-Time Paralegal II

New Mexico Legal Aid has an opening for a part-time Paralegal II position in its Albuquerque Law Office. The individual would work 20 hours per week. This position supports an attorney who provides services to individuals that are victims of domestic violence but will also deal with a variety of other family law issues. This position is offered pursuant to grant funding through 6/30/10. Employment after 6/30/10 is contingent on continued funding by the grantor.

Qualifications: Under the supervision of an attorney, some of the Paralegal duties include: (1) interviewing applicants for legal services, handling a reasonable caseload, and conducting research and investigations; (2) establishing and maintaining good relations with government agencies, courts, social service agencies, client and community groups; (3) administering and tracking applicants, clients and caseloads by the use of computers and other case management equipment; (4) consulting and sharing case responsibility with attorneys and other paralegals; and serving as link between NMLA and the client community. The Paralegal II is directly responsible to the Managing Attorney.

Demonstrate the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with clients, administrative and governmental agencies, and program staff. Demonstrate knowledge and/or ability to learn, of the assigned specialty areas. Demonstrate familiarity with legal services and/or clients of low-income social services programs. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required. Knowledge of law office practices, procedures and equipment. Proficient use of Word, Excel, Computer Skills. Reliable transportation and ability to perform outside work-related errands.
