Job: Software Engineer I

Positions in this job category are primarily responsible (at varying degrees) for the analysis, design, implementation, and support of programmatic solutions. These solutions may include custom designed and developed applications or installed commercial applications. Architecture, design, and development of web applications are included. Incumbents at this level may code, test, and debug, and/or support application programs for input, retrieval, indexing, and storage of data. Incumbents determine program steps and sequences based on program and receive direct technical management and/or mentoring for complex tasks. Contact with customer/user occurs for the purpose of clarifying specifications or demonstrating programs. Errors are limited to specific assignments or project tasks, and impact is minimal in terms of dollars, lost time, and/or unit image.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.

o Reviews program specifications to determine program steps and sequencing.
o Writes computer code and/or modifies system tables and setting to create application
programs or reports that meet user/customer needs.
o Develops sample input data to test adequacy of program steps. Observes and tests programs
using sample and actual data.
o Checks programs and corrects errors by altering program steps and sequences. Verifies test
results with users and/or supervisor.
o Reviews and writes documentation of program code, applications, instructions, and expected
results

JOB SPECIFICATIONS


Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or the equivalent combination of education and
experience.
- 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of programming through experience and/or formal logic education.
- Knowledge and experience in programming and job control language applicable to the
assignment.
- Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of information processing systems.
- Skill in writing computer code in various languages or in the language of the assignment.
- Skill in analyzing systems and program specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to translate functional specifications into program code.
- Familiarity with Open Source development is highly desirable
- Skill in databaase and web design
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
