Dr. Kent Kiehl Research

Socio Moral Psychopathy -
Clinical research assistant positions are currently available in Dr. Kent Kiehl’s laboratory at The Mind Research Network and the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico (open until filled). Bachelor’s degree required (MA and/or Ph.D. also accepted); pay will be commensurate with experience. All candidates should possess strong interest, and preferably experience, working with incarcerated populations. Duties include working with a research team on several grant funded studies examining the cognitive and neural systems underlying adolescent and adult psychopathy, substance abuse, and related illnesses. Hires will learn to assess psychopathy via clinical interviews, perform neuropsychological testing and DSM-IV structured interviews, and assist with preparation of grants, ethics proposals, and manuscripts. Clinical assessment training will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for recent college graduates who are seeking to go onto graduate or medical school. Qualified hires will also receive training in brain imaging (event-related potentials (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)) data collection and analyses. Position will include access to the MIND Mobile Imaging System that is deployed to local prisons (adolescent and adult male/female facilities). • Assist in the collection of scientific data, including its transfer, storage, and backup.
• Assist in the analysis of scientific data, including implementation of a variety of statistical analysis tools.
• Translate and interpret data and assist in the planning of data presentations.
• Assist in the preparation of papers for publication, presentations and conferences and workshops, and in the writing or project reports, articles and other documents.
• Perform critical analysis of literature relevant to research undertaken.
• Perform library research on specified topics, including researching current literature for methods and trends and subsequent evaluation of those methods.
• Write research progress reports, including summarizing test results of participating investigators; and assist in the preparation of papers for publication.
• Execute designated experiments, including the procurement of space, supplies and related equipment; prepare graphs and other illustrations to facilitate the interpretation of research findings; and to maintain knowledge of scientific trends through reading, conferences and seminars.
• Assist in the design and implementation of computer data systems, including establishing coding formats for future scientific research data collection.
• Assist in judging the validity of data obtained from experimental procedures and recommend additional tests and/or modifications.
• Instruct students and others in methods and instrument operation.
• Respond to requests for technical information from various public and private agencies and from individuals.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.



Skills / Requirements
Required:
Bachelor’s degree required, with two or more years of relevant experience in research required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must work well with children, comfortable with computers and working independently. Evening and weekend hours required.

Preferred:
Experience with statistical methods and statistical software desired. Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures of basic medical and/or clinical research. Experience in relevant computer software programs. Experience in working in a UNIX environment. Programming experience. Familiar with neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
Familiar with neuroimaging techniques and analyses.
